The Virgin’s Name Was Mary
From today’s reading…
In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the House of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.” Luke 1:26-27
If God sends one of His angels to you, you’re someone special. Lot was saved by an angel. Daniel was encouraged by one. Angels visit with Jesus in Matthew 11 after His 40 days in the desert. Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, was visited by “the angel of the Lord” (Luke 1:11) and told to name his son John.
Then there’s Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, who is visited on four separate occasions by angels—all told in Matthew chapters one and two—so we know he’s a special dude.
This brings us to Mary, who enjoyed God’s favor and had the Lord with her (Luke 1:28). “‘Of all women you are the most blessed’” is how her cousin, Elizabeth, greeted her (Luke 1:42).
Mary was not only visited by an angel, but she also conceived our Savior with the Holy Spirit, carried our Savior in her womb for nine months, birthed, nursed, bathed, and raised Him to adulthood, participated in every step of His journey to Golgotha, and was present at His resurrection.
Finally, as you read the words of Simeon in Luke 2:35, “‘and a sword will pierce your soul too — so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare’” and the story of the wedding in Cana in John 2:1-5, where Mary intercedes for the family since no one is closer Jesus than His mother, Mary is more than a “good person” or a “holy woman.”
She was, is, and shall forever remain the Mother of God who will always love God as only a mother can, and God will always have a special place in His heart for His mother, which is what all good men do, so honor the Mother of God, and pray to her to intercede on your behalf, which is the best way to…
