Will Your Words Do His Will?
From today’s reading…
…So shall my word be
that goes forth from my mouth;
It shall not return to me void,
but shall do my will,
achieving the end for which I sent it.”
The phrase “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” was created before the internet and social media because about 23 years before that the English author Edward Bulwer-Lytton coined the phrase “The pen is mightier than the sword.”
It’s the latter saying that surely influenced the quip “Never argue with someone who buys ink by the barrel” by a politician referring to the unwise choice by politician to do battle with the press. (That was before #FakeNews, but I digress.)
My point in all of this is to remind you of the meaning of the Lord’s words today as told by Isaiah, which is that words mean things.
God Himself spoke the universe into existence as did Shakespeare, Tolkien, Chesterton, and Rowling.
So do you and I.
What words will you send forth today to what ends?
Wil you tell that slow driver in front of you to…ahh…please pull over and allow you to pass?
Will you tell that tech support person whose native tongue is not English to…ahh…take their time troubleshooting your issue?
Will you tell that entitled, whining, demanding customer of yours (whose wife has cancer but they haven’t told anyone, yet) to…ah…have a blessed day and then give him your direct line for faster service in the future?
Your words today will do your will. Will they be doing the Lord’s, which is the only way to…
Stay the course.Keep the faith.Endure.
